Earn Money While in the Process of Moving

Moving is a process. It is one that starts from when you first get the idea to relocate, and it ends a bit after you are settled in your new home. Part of the process of moving is to spend money. However, another part can be how to make money not only to save it. There are a few ways that you can make money from your move outside of selling your current home. Plus, a bit more in the pocket never hurt anyone.

Garage Sales or Yard Sales

The most common way for people to make money from their move is by selling what they no longer need or want. And, selling items you no longer need can be achieved through an old-fashioned garage sale or yard sale. However, you would first have to decide what you want to sell.

These are the items that you no longer need or are the items that you want to upgrade by buying new ones. They can be anything from chairs, tables, to refrigerators, etc. that you can sell on garage sale. Even small items like plates and old children's toys can hit the mark. New parents are always looking for a bargain for the latter. Plus, if your children no longer fit into those clothes you have nothing to lose except unnecessary items to carry and move around. You can even sell your old clothes you no longer wear at garage or yard sales.

Just, double-check with the kids before you put their toys up for sale, just to be safe.

Once you have a list of the items you want to politely get rid of, then the fun can begin. A garage sale is an event that will take some planning, as well as organizing. You would want to pick a day, probably over the weekend, to attract as many people as you can to heighten your sales as well as the amount of money you could end up getting.

This is where marketing plays an important role since people have to know about the sale to get to it. Make sure that you include a start and end time of your garage sale. The former so that you have time to prepare while the latter is so that the potential customers know when to leave. As much as you want to sell all your items there has to be a cut-off time since you do have other things to do.

You can use social media to market your sale to people. As well as put up posters around the neighborhood. On the day of the garage/ yard sale, you would have to get the items out of the house and put prices on them. Keep in mind that people will try to get it for a lower price, aka bargaining.

What you can do is that you can have a list of the items, and next to each one you can put how much you want for it. However, the price that the buyers see should be higher than the one on your list. This way when the price goes down, they will think they get it at a discount, while you sell it for the price you wanted. This is what happens in real estate. You may even get lucky, and get the price shown on the item or higher than you expected on your list.

When the yard/ garage sale is happening make sure to keep your doors locked. Plus, if it is a hot sunny day make sure that you and the family have refreshments to keep you all going. As well as sunblock. You can even have the yard/ garage sale for a few days to make sure you take advantage of your time to get your items out, and money to come in.

Sell stuff on Social Media

If you are unable to go down the old-school garage sale route either you do not want to or do not have space to do one, you can turn to social media to sell your items. Social media platforms are not only used for marketing, but also for selling things too.

Sell on Facebook

If you wonder how to sell on Facebook, you can find Facebook groups or Facebook pages that are looking for second-hand items to buy. It is here that you can post what you are selling and for how much. Furthermore, you can also take pictures of the items in their best light to get the point across. However, make sure that you give them a good clean since clean stuff is always more appealing to a buyer.

Facebook and Instagram have marketplaces where it is now easier to sell through them. On Facebook, all you need to do is log in to your account, and follow these instructions:

  • Click on the marketplace that is to the left of your feed. It has a house as its icon.
  • Press the “plus icon” with “create new listing” next to it. This will take you to another page where you then press on the “Item for Sale” option.
  • Then you have to enter information about the item, including the price. If you are feeling generous and just want to get rid of something, you can put the price as 0 to make it free.
  • When all your details are done, you can press the “next” button.
  • And then press “publish” for your listing to go live.

Make sure you include your contact information, as well as methods of payment. Also, upload high-quality photos of the items.

Sell on Instagram

A popular online marketplace is Instagram. To set it up for selling items, you would first need to convert it to a business or creator account. As well as link it to your Facebook account. However, if you do not yet have Instagram or you know this will be a once-off sale then you can open a personal account and then convert it to a Business Manager account instead, to sell items on Instagram.

Once your account is up and running you would have to do the following steps to get your products shown on the app:

  • Decide how you want the buyers to complete their purchase by choosing a checkout method.
  • Then you can decide if you want your online store to be on Instagram only or on Facebook as well.
  • Afterwards, you add your items to your shop by creating a new catalog.
  • Review what you have done, and if you are happy with it, then submit it for review to Instagram.

However, you may have to wait from two days to up to two weeks for Instagram to check out your store to review it, so you can be able to sell on Instagram. While Instagram is a variable option it can be a lot of work and waiting. The best would be to go through Facebook if you do not have that much time, and make a quick Facebook sale.

Furthermore, there are also online places such as eBay, Amazon, etc. where you can also sell your items. If you plan on using all your options, then make sure that you keep up to date with what is sold where. The last thing you would want is for someone to want an item from your Facebook that was sold through Amazon already.

Online avenues will take a cut of your pay, which makes sense since you are using their space to sell your stuff. Instagram and Facebook will take a fee of 5% per shipment, or it will take a flat fee of $0.40 for shipments if the shipment is $8.00 or less.

Furthermore, other platforms like Amazon and eBay will also take a cut. Therefore, you must research how much it is, as well as the conditions that every platform has. Including the ones that have not been mentioned in this article. However, you do have to spend money to make it, but be aware of how much it will be.

Give Gifts or Donations

Not all your items can be sold. However, it does not mean that you have to take them with you to your new home. Instead, you can donate them or gift them. Certain items can make amazing gifts such as paintings, books, and lamps just to name a few. Gifting items to people can be a sign of love as a souvenir of your presence in their lives.

But, you do not only have to gift small items, you can also give away bigger ones too. Such as a three to four years old television that is or an air-purifier. Even an old laptop or PC can do wonders for someone else's life. Whatever, you can give away to friends and family is worth it.

Not just for them receiving something that they can use or make their home more decorative. But, also for you. It is better to give away something than to just leave it behind. It will make you feel good, and help you out with your move.

Moving companies charge according to weight. Therefore, the less weight you have the less money you will spend on the move. This means that you will save money on it. So it is a win-win situation.

One of the best items that you can give is books. This is because many people like the old-fashioned feel of books between their fingers. They could end up getting a copy they have never read before, or what that they did but want to read again. Books make great gifts. Plus, they are also heavy. Therefore, taking them out of your moving equation can help out your costs too. But, check with the family before you give any books away.
